Concussion and the importance of a smart return to ride

Concussion is one of the most serious risks in racing, and one that cannot be judged by symptoms alone. A rider may feel fine, but that does not always mean the brain has fully recovered. That is what makes concussion different from many other injuries, and why a smart return to ride has to be built on more than instinct or pressure to get back.

In racing, that means taking signs and symptoms seriously, recognising when something is not right, and making sure medical clearance and monitoring are thorough. It also means reducing the stigma around reporting symptoms, both in yourself and in others, so that short-term competitiveness does not come at the expense of long-term health.

In this conversation, Craig Williams speaks about what riders and the broader industry need to take seriously about concussion, how to recognise the warning signs, why “feeling fine” is not always enough, and what a sensible return-to-ride process looks like in practice.
